Jill’s Top Movie Picks

Here are my favorite scenes from some major movies.  (Click IMDb for all the trademarks, release data and stuff).

Can you spot why?

Spy Game, starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt (IMDb). Nathan Muir (played by Robert Redford) is due to retire that day from the CIA, and asks his secretary to hold a bag of documents for him.  She says, “feeling a little paranoid on our last day?”  To which the Redford character responds, “When did Noah build the ark, Gladys?  Before the rain.  Before the rain.”

Moneyball, starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill (IMDb).  Remember the scene at the end where Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt) is sitting in Boston, and the Red Socks team owner is commenting on how the Pitt character started something new in baseball, a new way of doing things.  John Henry tells Beane, “I know you’re taking it in the teeth out there.  But the first guy through the wall always gets bloody.  Always.  …  Anybody who’s not tearing their team down right now and rebuilding it using your model, they’re dinosaurs.”

The Matrix, part 3, Revolutions, starring Kenau Reeves, Laurence Fishburn (IMDb).   Remember the scene toward the end, where “Mr. Smith,” the character from the ‘system’ who is all powerful, who is replicated multiple times as other Mr. Smiths who look just like him, is pummeling Neo in the hole in the ground, and Neo keeps getting up out of the mud?

Mr. Smith:           Why, Mr. Anderson, why, why?  Why do you do it?  Why, why get up?  Why keep fighting?  …  You must be able to see it, Mr. Anderson.  You must know it by now.  You can’t win, it’s pointless to keep fighting. Why Mr. Anderson, why do you persist?

Neo:                     Because I choose to.
